A New Heart in Glass

Barleybrook Retreat underwent a comprehensive renovation and full redecoration, centred around a spectacular single-storey extension that reshaped the main living spaces. Constructed in Cotswold stone with slim black steel-framed glazing, the addition creates a confident architectural contrast while remaining firmly connected to the character of the original house.

Large rooflights, expansive garden-facing windows and glazed doors allow daylight to move across the new kitchen and dining area throughout the day. Exposed stonework and timber detailing introduce warmth, while tiled flooring with underfloor heating provides comfort and continuity across the ground floor. Internal steel-framed doors divide adjoining rooms without interrupting the flow of light, creating spaces that feel open yet clearly defined.

Project Statement

Light, craftsmanship and carefully considered connections have transformed Barleybrook Retreat into a home that feels both expansive and deeply rooted in its setting.

Character, Carefully Reworked

Beyond the extension, the main house was extensively upgraded with a new fitted kitchen, new bathrooms and bespoke additions produced by our in-house joinery team. These included a new front door, fitted TV cabinetry, a beautifully integrated window seat and further made-to-measure details designed around the proportions and practical needs of each room. Timber flooring brings warmth to the living room and TV room, while Burlington sanitaryware and carefully selected tiling give the bathrooms a refined, traditional quality.

At attic level, new dormers, rooflights and carefully formed window openings brought greater space and natural light to the upper floor. Existing windows were refurbished where appropriate, with new units introduced throughout the main house. Behind the finishes, the property was fully rewired and replumbed, supported by extensive plastering, painting and a carefully planned lighting scheme that allows the architecture, joinery and natural materials to take centre stage.

Working with Clarke Construction Group, has been a really positive experience. Nathan Clarke who runs the business ensures that the team are focused on delivering a high quality build at a reasonable price. Clarke have over 100 contractors on his books which means that he can ensure the quality of the team and the work. We have found the whole team a pleasure to work with, they listen to customer feedback and come up with a range of options to solve any issues that arise.

We went out to tender to 5 builders and Clarke's were in the top 2 but their quality was streets ahead of others. 9 months into the build we are so pleased we chose them.

The team are polite and keep their noise down, so we have had no issues with neighbours, not a minor things in a small village.

Overall I have no reservation in recommending Nathan and the team of Clarke Construction.

Before/After

Barleybrook Retreat has evolved from a collection of disconnected rooms, underused external areas and an annex requiring complete renewal into a coherent, light-filled country home. The new extension gives the property a generous social centre, while improved openings, steel glazing and landscaped terraces establish a natural flow between house and garden. Inside, renewed services, bespoke joinery, additional attic space and carefully finished rooms provide modern comfort without overwhelming the property’s Cotswold character. The restored annex adds another layer of flexibility, completing a multi-faceted retreat designed for family life, entertaining and long-term enjoyment.
