Garden Sanctuary

Designed as a practical yet refined addition to a rural Gloucestershire home, this timber-framed garden retreat was created to serve multiple roles without compromise. The client required a space that could function as a productive home office during the week while comfortably accommodating guests when needed.

Built using traditional timber framing techniques, the structure was carefully positioned and proportioned to sit naturally within its surroundings. Generous internal height and considered glazing allow natural light to flood the space, creating an interior that feels open, calm, and purposeful. The result is a highly usable outbuilding that combines honest construction with a warm, contemporary finish.

This project shows how traditional timber framing can deliver a modern, flexible living space without losing character, craftsmanship, or longevity.

Internal Configuration and Use

The internal layout was carefully planned to maximise usability while maintaining a strong sense of space. One half of the building is dedicated to a dual-desk home office, positioned to benefit from natural light and garden views, creating a focused and comfortable working environment.

The remaining area functions as a relaxed living space, complete with bespoke shelving and a sofa that converts into guest accommodation. Despite the compact footprint, high ceilings and well-placed windows prevent the interior from feeling enclosed. A discreetly integrated bathroom and compact kitchen cubby provide everything required for fully self-contained use.

Nathan and the Clarke Construction team were excellent, even working through the snow to keep the build moving. We love the space and use it every day. The whole process was handled with genuine care and professionalism. Thank you.

Construction and Craftsmanship

Constructed using a traditional timber frame, this build required a high level of precision and an in-depth understanding of traditional joinery. Timber cladding and a stone-tiled roof were selected to ensure the building sits comfortably within its rural setting while offering long-term durability.

Throughout the build, close attention was paid to detail, from the exposed internal beams to the external joinery and finishes. Even during challenging weather conditions, progress was carefully managed to maintain build quality and programme. The completed retreat is a robust, well-crafted structure designed to perform beautifully for years to come.

Before/After

Prior to construction, this area of the garden was largely unused. The addition of the timber retreat has transformed it into a functional, well-defined space that supports both working life and guest accommodation. The new structure enhances the usability of the garden while adding a considered architectural presence and long-term value to the property.

No Nails Frame

The hole in the ground from last visit has become this wonderful timber frame out building. The team have been battling through the worst conditions to get to this point - heavy rains and snow haven't stopped them as they construct this ‘no nails’ traditional style home office.
