A remarkable conversion of historic stables and garden buildings into a self-contained leisure retreat, combining a swimming pool, spa, entertaining spaces, and contemporary comfort within an extraordinary Cotswold setting.

A New Life for Historic Buildings

The Church View Annex began as a collection of traditional stables, barns, and ancillary garden buildings. Rather than replacing them, the existing structures were carefully repaired and reworked into a substantial multi-purpose retreat designed to complement the Grade II listed main house. Original stone walls and oak roof trusses were retained and celebrated, with renewed roof coverings, insulation, repointing, and structural interventions providing the performance required for year-round use.

A palette of exposed Cotswold stone, aged oak, natural stone flooring, and black steel-framed glazing gives the annex a strong architectural identity. The vaulted interiors remain deliberately open and dramatic, while large sliding glass doors dissolve the boundary between the main living space, paved terrace, pool, and outdoor entertaining areas.

Designed for Entertaining

At the centre of the annex is a full oak kitchen designed for relaxed entertaining. Textured timber cabinetry, stone worktops, a substantial range cooker, exposed masonry, and suspended lighting create a space that feels tactile, informal, and deeply connected to the building. A dedicated outdoor cooking area extends this experience onto the terrace, establishing a natural setting for long lunches, summer evenings, and gatherings around the pool.

The wider annex includes a cinema and relaxation space, a home office, a large purpose-built wine cabinet, and generous dining and seating areas. Black steel-framed internal doors and fluted glazing divide the different functions without closing down the architecture, while bespoke joinery has been used to shape storage, workspaces, and fitted furniture around the original structure.

The annex has exceeded our expectations. Nathan, Adam and the whole team have created a genuinely exceptional space that feels completely at home beside the main house.

It's all been delivered to an excellent standard despite the complex nature of the conversion. It is beautifully finished, highly practical, and has completely changed how we use the property. Thank you!

A Complete Private Spa

The conversion was planned as a complete wellness suite, incorporating a gym, sauna, shower and changing facilities, toilets, wash areas, and a dedicated plant room. Full plumbing, electrical installation, and underfloor heating were integrated throughout, with heritage-style brass conduit and carefully selected fittings used against the exposed stone walls to make the modern services part of the design rather than something to conceal.

Outside, Clarke Construction Group built the new swimming pool from its reinforced structure through to waterproofing, dark large-format tiling, filtration services, coping, and final finishes. Extensive stone paving, drystone walling, landscaping, and the adjoining outdoor kitchen complete a private poolside environment that supports the main house while functioning as a destination in its own right.

What began as a series of underused stables, barns, and garden buildings has become a sophisticated self-contained annex that dramatically expands the lifestyle offered by Church View House. The original agricultural character is still clearly visible in the stone walls, oak trusses, vaulted roofs, and honest material palette, but the buildings now provide an entirely new level of comfort and purpose. The completed annex brings together a swimming pool, gym, sauna, cinema, kitchen, home office, wine storage, bathing facilities, and indoor-outdoor entertaining spaces. Once secondary buildings within the grounds, they are now an extraordinary private retreat and one of the defining features of the wider estate.
